Directors,
Please pass this on to your clubs Immediately. I strongly encourage
any interested club to contact me right away.

Regarding: Potential Conservation Project
I have been contacted by TPWD about a potential
problem on Lake Quitman. Waterhyacinth has again expanded and
can potentially restrict access. We are seeking an interested
club or region which would be willing to organize a one day
or multi day hyacinth removal project on Quitman. This is a
great small scale project which will provide many benefits
to your club and our organization. Please see the information
below from Kevin Storey TPWD Inland Fisheries District 3B Biologist.
Please contact me as soon as possible with questions or interest
in this project. I look forward to hearing from you.

Subject: Lake Quitman waterhyacinth
Tim,
The waterhyacinth on Lake Quitman has reared
its head once more and we are faced with trying to tame it. Last
year we estimated coverage at just under 1 acre, but in May
2009 it had increased to over 5 acres!
I was wondering if you might know of a bass
club who wanted to do a good deed in East Texas and participate
in a physical removal to reduce the number of waterhyacinth
colonies around the lake. Some of the areas are too extensive
for removal, but there are large numbers of small colonies
around the shoreline. If we can reduce the number of
sites maybe we can slow (or stop) its spread. Fortunately
to date the plant has remained in the western third of the
reservoir. We'd like to keep it there so we're not dealing
with a reservoir-wide problem!
I talked to the county commissioner, Keith
Gilbreath, and asked if they could provide a dump truck and
a front end loader to haul the plants away and he said
they could. I am hoping we can provide a boat
and a couple of staff members.
Thanks
Kevin Storey

The TBFN South East Region will be undertaking an ambitious,
but highly beneficial project to remove trace amounts of Giant
Salvinia from Lake Sam Rayburn. Please see details below. We
would like for you to make all your regions aware of the project.
We are looking for broad participation from not only the Federation
Nation, but also the BASS ACT team, and other members of the
angling community. TPWD will be heavily involved with this
event and possibly supplying financial support as well. We
are also looking for sponsors to provide supplies, water etc.
Charles, we would like to have the State Trailer there as we
will have media coverage, and it can serve as headquarters.
This will be a great project with lots of exposure for our
organization. I hope we can count on some of you attending
and helping as well. This could be our biggest on the ground
project of the year. Leslie and Eric McGaha will be the lead
on this project. Please contact them, myself, or Ron Gunter
if you have questions.
For
more information or to sponsor the effort, please visit the SE
Region web site.

Texas BASS Federation Nation Members and all,
I am attaching a generic
letter that I have
sent via Fax to Kenneth Salazar, the Secretary of the Interior
voicing our opposition to the lead ban in national parks which
effects both ammunition and fishing tackle. Our National Conservation
Director from BASS has a meeting Monday with the Deputy Secretary
of the Interior, and I have been advised to get as many of
these type letters to them as quickly as possible both before
and after this meeting. I have a direct fax number which will
get them to the right desk which is 202-208-6956.
You can follow up by mailing if you like although that process
is very slow. For those of you who can, make the time to send
a letter asking Mr. Salazar to respectfully request that
the National Park Service withdraw the current proposal in
favor of a more transparent, public process for future actions
regarding the use of lead in National Parks. Please feel free
to cut and paste from my letter, edit it as necessary, or write
your own. WE NEED YOUR VOICE!!! Please
take 5 minutes and do it now!!!!
Thanks

Click here to view a poster we have developed
to try to make sure bass are handled in the way best for their
health. Through the years TPWD biologists have found that handling
bass using two wet hands and supporting them at tail and head
as shown is the safest way.
Please help us spread the word by printing and posting this
poster and/or by sending it to others who will do the same.
A note about the poster: The original size is 18” x
24”, and most people cannot print a document that size
without tiling. However, by setting the view to 22.3% (“fit
page”) and then printing, I was able to print it on an
8.5” x 11” sheet. You will need Adobe Acrobat
to be able to view PDF files.

12/22/08 - TBFN Members,
an article that Robert Montgomery, Staff Writer for BASS, wrote
about the TBFN plans to start a fundraising banquet program
that will benefit the Conservation efforts for Texas, BASS
and other State Federations. The success of this project could
put us on equal footing with CCA and Duck's Unlimited in terms
of sporting organization commitment and recognition. As plans
get underway, I hope that you will support our efforts.
